Affiliate marketing is no doubt one of the best ways to make money online. For beginners trying to understand how to start affiliate marketing business in Nigeria, this article is to guide you step by step how to get started with affiliate marketing business and scale it into a full-time job. This article will help you understand affiliate marketing and how it works as well as how you can get started.

By the way if you like to take the fast track lane just like I did some months back, check out this course on Affiliate marketing and be on your way to earning your first affiliate income in no time.

First thing first, what is affiliate marketing?

Affiliate marketing just like every other online business model, is a way you get paid for selling or promoting other peoples’ products or services. This payment is in form of commission after each successful sale.

There are three parties involved in affiliate marketing business, we have the merchant, the affiliate and the customers.

The merchant is the owner of the product or services to be sold, the affiliate is the one that finds buyers for those products via promotions and the customers are the consumers or buyers of those products or services. The affiliate marketer is the one that stands as an intermediary between the merchant’ offers (products or services) and the customers.

All you need do as an affiliate marketer is to search for products that are related to your niche to promote, promote the products or services and get paid for each purchase made via your affiliate link or links.

The following are some of the Pros of starting an affiliate marketing business in Nigeria:

  • It is easy and involves little or no capital to start.
  • You don’t need a prior experience to get started. Anybody can start making money via affiliate marketing without prior experience in marketing but you should be ready and committed to learning how it works in order to be successful in affiliate marketing.

  • No financial risk involved and there no limit to how much you can make through affiliate marketing.
  • You don’t need to design your own product; you start by promoting other people’s products or services and you are on your way to earning passive income either weekly or monthly depending on the affiliate platform or network you choose to work with.

What are the steps involve in starting Affiliate Marketing Business in Nigeria?

There are about four steps involve in starting affiliate marketing business in Nigeria:

  1. Choose a niche
  2. Start a blog and create blog contents
  3. Join affiliate programs/Networks
  4. Promote affiliate products

1. Choose a niche

Before you start promoting affiliate offers, the best way to start is to choose a niche and start writing blog contents around that niche. It should be noted that affiliate marketing is not a get rich quick schemes, you need to be ready to treat it as a business and nurture it until you start seeing results.

A niche could be seen as your area of interest or topic or subject you have ideas on. This will help you target or attract the right people to your affiliate offers. Some of the niches you can choose from are health and fitness niche, make money online niche, relationships and family niche, parenting and baby niches etc.

Still struggling about the niche to choose? Download my free e-book on 100+ Niche Ideas from here.

However, you need to find out if the niche you are choosing can be easily monetize or not before choosing the niche.

2. Start a blog and Create Blog Contents.

After choosing a niche, the next step is to build a blog and start publishing contents around your chosen niche. I wouldn’t want you to get me wrong here, you can actually promote affiliate products or services without creating a blog and still make affiliate sales but if you want to achieve success on a long-term basis, then, building a blog is essential.

A blog helps you connect with your readers through helpful information you provide and helps you build subscriber base through which you can do a follow up via email marketing.

So How Do You Start a Blog?

Starting a blog is easier than you might think. All you need do is to take the following steps:

Get a Domain Name and Hosting

A domain name is the name you wish to give to your blog. For example, www.smartdropshippers.com It may have any extension such as .com, .net, .org etc. However, whichever name you choose make sure it is short, catchy and meaningful.

To get your domain name, you can do that with namecheap for cheaper domain names and they also have reliable hosting packages for your websites.

Check out Namecheap domain

Check out Namecheap Hosting.

Shared Hosting with Namecheap

Also, you can check out Bluehost for both your domain name and hosting at discounted prices. You need a good and reliable webhost for your online presence and for your  peace of mind. Some webhost can be frustrating when it comes to uptime and that is why am recommending Namecheap and Bluehost but if you are on a low budget, you can try Smartweb, they are tested and trusted

The next step in getting your blog setup is by installing WordPress. If you’re going with Bluehost hosting, WordPress is automatically installed for you but with Namecheap and Smartweb, you will need to install WordPress from your Cpanel after which you install and activate either a free theme or a Premium theme from your WordPress dashboard.

For more details on how to install WordPress and install a theme, you can read this blog post.

Having setup your blog, the next thing is to start writing or creating contents around your chosen niche or topic. You need to write good and valuable contents and be consistent in your writing but if you feel the need to hire someone to write on your behalf you can hire someone from Fiverr, Upwork or any freelancer marketplace. Some of the articles you can start writing are “How to” articles, “Reviews” articles, “Tips and List” articles etc.

3. Join Affiliate Programs/Networks

Now that you have completed step 1 and 2, it is time to start joining affiliate programs or networks. This step needs you to choose wisely, you only go for affiliate programs that are related to your chosen niche or topic and start promoting. Also, make sure you are promoting offers that are helpful to your audience.

You will first of all need to sign up for affiliate programs via affiliate networks. Most affiliate networks usually have various products in so many niches that you can start promoting once you’re accepted into their networks. Some affiliate networks payout weekly while some payout monthly via Payoneer, direct deposit, checks or PayPal.  Some of the affiliates networks you can join are; Amazon Associates Program, Clickbank, Shareasale, Alidropship Affiliate program, Partnerstack, Impact Radius, Linkshare, Payoneer affiliate program, Commission Junction (CJ) etc.

However, you will need to understand the rules and regulations guiding each affiliate network before signing up. Some affiliate networks don’t accept affiliates from some countries for example Clickbank while some deactivate affiliates’ accounts if they don’t make sales within a certain period e.g Cj affiliate and Amazon Associates Program.

Some affiliate networks you can join in Nigeria are Expertnaire, Wakanow, Afriliate, Konga, Jumia etc.

4. Promote Affiliate Products

Promoting affiliate products means driving traffic to those products or offers for people to see and make a purchase. You can promote affiliate products using a blog or without a blog but affiliate offers are better promoted using a blog, by promoting affiliate products with your blog, you are not only promoting affiliate offers or products but you’re also promoting yourself and some of your own products or services on your blog too.

To start promoting affiliate products or services you will need to increase your blog traffic because the more traffic your blog gets, the more money you make. To increase your blog traffic for free, check out this blog post on how to increase the traffic of your blog or website.

Some of the ways you can start promoting affiliate products are through your blog posts (contextual links), banners ads, product reviews, search engine, paid traffic, email promotions and via social media.

So How Do You Get Paid?

Affiliate Networks pay through either PayPal, direct bank deposit, check or Payoneer when you reach a certain threshold say $100 or less. Some countries are blacklisted from getting a working PayPal account that can send and receive money which is why I will recommend opening a Payoneer account to be given a valid US bank account to receive affiliate payments and you can then get your money from any MasterCard enabled ATM anywhere in the world.

Do you need a working PayPal account that can send and receive money from anywhere regardless of your country without hiding your IP address or using VPN? Click here to find out how.

In conclusion, to make money as an affiliate marketer you will need to treat it as a business and be patient especially as a beginner.
